Mahama Gov’t Shows Progress in Galamsey Fight – Environmental Scientist

The John Mahama administration has demonstrated renewed determination in tackling illegal mining, with visible progress in protecting Ghana’s forest reserves, according to Dr Ekua Odoom, Environmental Scientist at the University of Ghana’s Institute of Environmental and Sanitation Studies.

Assessing the government’s one-year performance on Channel One TV on Tuesday, she stated that the administration is combining military enforcement, legal reforms, and evidence-based policies to address the menace.

Dr. Odoom highlighted the institutionalisation of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), which works in close collaboration with national security agencies.

“There has been appreciable visibility and clear action in fighting galamsey. So far, about 1,500 arrests have been made, including foreign nationals, alongside the seizure of mining equipment,” she said, pointing to the tangible impact of the government’s operations.

She also praised key legal reforms, including the repeal of LI 2462, which effectively banned all forms of mining in forest reserves.

“Statistics show an 80% reduction in illegal mining within these areas, and nearly 90% of forest reserves are now protected. The mandate of the Forest Commission has also been fully reinstated,” Dr Odoom added.

On evidence-based interventions, she noted that the government commissioned a ministerial committee to develop a blueprint for sustainable mining, which produced strong recommendations.

Additionally, measures have been introduced to regulate the importation of excavators, aimed at controlling illegal mining activities.

“These steps demonstrate that the Mahama government is combining strategy, enforcement, and policy reforms to curb galamsey and safeguard the country’s natural resources,” Dr Odoom added.
