Mahama Urges Global Manufacturing Firms to Invest in Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama is appealing to international vaccine manufacturers to partner with government in establishing a Ghana Vaccine Manufacturing Hub, a strategic initiative aimed at boosting the country’s and Africa’s health security.

Speaking at an engagement with pharmaceutical industry players at the WHX Leaders Conference, Mr. Mahama said the continent’s experience during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed deep vulnerabilities, especially Africa’s dependence on imported vaccines.

According to him, the proposed hub will not only enhance Ghana’s capacity to produce vaccines locally, but will also strengthen the region’s preparedness for future health emergencies.

“We cannot continue to depend entirely on imports for vaccines that determine our survival. We are calling on manufacturers and investors to collaborate with government to make this hub a reality,” he said.

He added that Ghana’s existing pharmaceutical capacity, coupled with its strategic position within West Africa, places the country in a strong position to lead vaccine development and distribution on the continent.

Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare revealed that the ministry is engaging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat to ensure seamless intra-African trade, particularly for pharmaceutical products once local vaccine production begins.

She explained that removing trade barriers and improving market access under AfCFTA would enable Ghana-made vaccines and health products to compete effectively across the continent.

“We are working closely with the AfCFTA to create smooth access for our manufacturers across Africa. This is essential if we want to build strong, competitive industries,” she said.

Additionally, Peter Hall, President for the Middle East, India, Turkey and Africa at Informa Markets, highlighted the importance of platforms like the WHX Leaders Conference. He noted that such gatherings foster collaboration, drive innovation, and create opportunities for governments, investors, and industry stakeholders to build resilient health and industrial systems across regions.

The WHX Leaders Conference brought together policymakers, global health experts, investors, and pharmaceutical companies to discuss innovations in health systems, industrial transformation, and Africa’s preparedness for future global shocks.
