Africa Must “Speak with One Voice” on Energy — President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has officially opened AOW:Energy 2025 in Accra, describing the event as a defining moment for African unity, pride and partnership in the global energy sector.

Addressing more than 1,200 delegates on Tuesday, September 16, the President welcomed ministers, dignitaries, chief executives and technical experts from across Africa and beyond, stressing that the gathering underlined the continent’s determination to “speak with one voice” on the future of natural resource development.

“AOW:Energy is here to stay. It is more than just an event—it is a movement run with African interests first. This is a platform for Africa, by Africa, and it is a moment of national pride for Ghana to host it,” President Mahama said. He added: “Together, we will align our goals, unlock more production, and deliver prosperity for our people.”

The President underscored the need for stronger partnerships to accelerate upstream development, bolster energy security and promote intra-African trade. He also called for collaboration between governments and investors to expand infrastructure and production across the continent.

A central highlight of his remarks was a tribute to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. He described GNPC as “a pillar of national pride and achievement” whose four decades of work had left a significant imprint on Ghana’s energy journey and socio-economic development.

President Mahama expressed appreciation to international and regional partners who had supported the conference, singling out ExxonMobil for sponsoring the opening night at the Presidency, as well as Chevron, ENI, Seplat, FIRST E&P, Oando, TGS and other sponsors.

“This week reflects unity. This extraordinary gathering of leaders, companies, governments, and investors is proof that our industry is strongest when we work together. We stand for more growth, more success, and a shared prosperity for Africa,” he declared. “AOW:Energy is not only a platform to attract investment, but also a commitment to an African-led agenda—designed to secure our resources, develop our economies, and power our future.”

He concluded with a pledge to build on the momentum: “Let this be the start of a new chapter. With the Ministry, the Presidency, our agencies, and all partners, we look forward to an even bigger AOW:Energy 2026. Together, we will continue to showcase Africa’s upstream story and build a future of pride, strength, and unity.”
